Adult Sports
Sports are not just for kids. Adults too can enjoy the teamwork and friendships that are formed through participation in Adult Sports' leagues such as volleyball and basketball. Participation is not based on skill but the desire to learn and improve on the fundamentals of the sport while demonstrating positive character values.
The South Montgomery County YMCA Adult Sports Programs are designed and created to provide an atmosphere of fun, fellowship and friendly competition. Registration is by TEAM only. The number of teams in each league are limited and team fees must be paid in full before a team is allowed to play.
Individuals without a team that would like to participate should sign the free agent list at the Welcome Center.

Volunteer Coaches Our volunteer coaches are required to attend the ASEP (American Sport Education Program) course, a nationally recognized youth sports training. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application, provide references which are checked and agree to a criminal background screening. All officials and umpires are certified in sport specific skills, as well as, first aid and CPR.
One of our primary goals is to provide a safe environment for the athletes, coaches, officials and spectators.

Seven Pillars of Youth Sports Kids learn so much through sports, such as skills and positive attitudes they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. Enriching their personal development is the goal of YMCA Youth Sports, a unique sports program that combines the YMCA’s philosophy of fair play, teamwork and inclusiveness with program concepts and resources based on the latest youth sports research. As a result of this research, the knowledge of sport scientists who have spent their careers studying children’s sports and the practical wisdom of YMCA youth sports directors who have guided literally millions of young people through sports programs, the Seven Pillars of YMCA Youth Sports has been developed for the YMCAs of the Greater Houston area.
1) Everyone Plays: We do not use tryout to select the best players, nor do we cut kids from Y Youth Sports. Everyone who registers is assigned to a team. During the season everyone receives equal practice time and plays at least half of every game.
2) Safety First: Although children may get hurt playing sports, we do all we can to prevent injuries. We’ve modified each sport to make it safer and more enjoyable to play. Sports Directors and Coaches are instructed to make sure the equipment and facilities are safe, to teach skills that are appropriate for children’s developmental level, gradually develop the players’ fitness levels so they are conditioned for the sport and constantly supervise the athletes.
3) Character Development: YMCA programs teach the YMCA values of Honesty, Caring, Respect, Responsibility and Faith. We are more interested in developing children’s character through sports than in developing a few highly skilled players. The YMCA strongly believes that it’s necessary to teach the values so that we can build strong kids and families.
4) Positive Competition: Competition can be a positive process when the pursuit of victory remains in the right perspective. Learning to compete is important for children and learning to cooperate in a competitive world is an essential lesson of life. Through Y Youth Sports, we want to help children learn these lessons.
5) Family Involvement: YMCA Youth Sports encourages parents to be involved appropriately in their child’s participation. In addition to parents helping as volunteer coaches, officials and timekeepers, we encourage them to be at practices and games to support their child’s participation.
6) Sport for All: YMCA Youth Sports is an inclusive sport program. That means all young athletes are included rather than excluded regardless of their race, gender, religious creed, characteristics or ability. We ask our adult leaders to encourage and appreciate the diversity of children in our society and to encourage the children and their parents to do the same.
7) Sport for Fun: Sports are naturally fun for most children. They love the challenge of mastering the skills of the game, playing with their friends and competing with their peers. Coaches and parents are reminded not to over organize or dominate the activity to the point that it destroys the child’s enjoyment of the sport. Sports are for kids . . . let them have Fun! These seven pillars represent what makes YMCA Youth Sports so special. The focus is on the child, not the final score or final record. As with all programs at the YMCA, Youth Sports is also centered around our mission; To put Judeo-Christian values into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Uniforms YMCA jerseys are interchangeable. We have a reversible jersey for basketball, a reversible mesh shirt for all outdoor sports and a t-shirt for volleyball. Therefore, in many cases, athletes may wear one jersey for multiple sports.
