THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- October 7, 2009 -- The Lone Star College-Montgomery Chamber Singers, a select choir of 16 voices, and the Concert Choir will perform with the String Ensemble on Thursday, October 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Building D on the mainstage theatre. This concert is free and open to everyone.

The concert program, “Music of Expectation, Longing and Redemption,” is a selection of music from the vast corners of time—from English madrigals and contemporary classical to hits from musical theatre, pop, gospel, and jazz. Artists include Dowland, Morley, Barber, Bernstein, Billy Joel, U2, and others.

The performance is directed by Dominick DiOrio, assistant professor of music at LSC-Montgomery, and Dr. David C. Cole, director of the string ensemble at LSC-Montgomery.

“Music has a very particular power. It can communicate deep senses of emotion,” DiOrio said. “These are all great pieces of music that communicate our own dearest wishes and desires. The variety on this concert is immense, and I know audiences will love it.”

Currently, DiOrio is a doctoral candidate in choral conducting at Yale University (Master of Musical Arts 2009). He received his master’s degree in choral conducting from Yale University in 2008, studying with noted professors Marguerite L. Brooks and Simon Carrington. DiOrio received his bachelor’s degree in composition from the Ithaca College School of Music in 2006, graduating summa cum laude.

In addition to his work at LSC-Montgomery, Cole is the director of orchestral studies at Sam Houston State University where he conducts the University Symphony and the University Chamber Orchestra. He has previously led the orchestra programs at Northern Kentucky University, the University of Utah, Southern Utah University, and Northern Michigan University. He has also taught in the Waco, Texas public schools.

Cole holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from West Virginia University, a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from The University of Iowa, a master’s degree in violin performance from Baylor University, and a doctorate in orchestral conducting from The University of Arizona.
