Lady Cavaliers Sweep Klein in Volleyball Playoff Match

by Glenn Sattell
Nov 03, 2009

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Several songs blared through the College Park gym on Monday night before the Lady Cavaliers took to the court for a bi-district playoff match with Klein. None of them were BTO’s classic “Taking Care of Business.”

That would have been the appropriate song for what was to come.

The District 14-5A champions and No. 6 state-ranked Lady Cavaliers made short work of District 13-5A fourth-place representative Klein, 25-5, 25-17, 25-8. College Park (34-10) advances to the area round of the playoffs where they will face either Cy-Fair or Leander. Those two teams meet for a bi-district playoff match on Tuesday.

College Park controlled Monday’s match from the outset, trailing very briefly in the second game. But the Lady Cavaliers easily rallied from one-point deficits on two occasions to win the middle game. Other than that, College Park was in complete control.

“They started to come alive in the second game and actually started to give us a match,” said College Park coach Candice Collins. “But I think that once we kind of got our serve-receive and eliminated some hitting errors, we started to get back on track.

“It was a good match for us. I thought that we played really well. We didn’t really know a whole lot about Klein. And I think that we came out and we totally took advantage of our caliber of play and everything on our side, we made sure that we did right.

“I think that was the basically the key, taking care of business on our side, tonight.”

Senior Lexi Erwin and sophomore Katie Mitchell were money at the net as usual along with seniors Lauren Chapman and Abby Mayer, and sophomore Taylor Erwin. Setters Logan Ash (junior) and Michelle Griffith (sophomore) turned in steady performances as well.
