THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Blue Ox Moving & Storage of The Woodlands has teamed up with New Jersey-based Move For Hunger to help fight hunger here in Texas, particularly in the Montgomery county area.

Joe Beverly, owner of Blue Ox Moving and Storage said, “As you can imagine, many people throw out a good deal of “stuff” when they move. Unfortunately, a lot of this stuff is perfectly good food that could be delivered to a family in need.” With the Move For Hunger program, families set aside non-perishable food items that they would like to donate before they relocate. “Then,” according to Beverly, “on moving day, Blue Ox Moving & Storage packs up the food and delivers it to the Montgomery County Food Bank.”

Today, the face of hunger is rapidly changing. It is staggering to note that in Texas, one in five Texans live on incomes that put them at risk of hunger, according to Move For Hunger, a hunger relief organization that works with relocation companies to collect extra food from people who don’t need it, and deliver it to food banks across North America. Additionally, out of those statistics, 40 percent of those in need in Texas are children.

Move For Hunger’s network of 612 relocation companies includes Blue Ox Moving & Storage. In Texas alone, there are a total of 55 movers who participate in the program, with 11 of those companies located in the Houston area. Blue Ox Moving & Storage is the only moving company located north of Houston participating in the program. Beverly added, “We are grateful for the support and truly thankful for the generosity from our clients. Those donations directly impact thousands in need in our community through the Montgomery County Food Bank.”

According to Adam Lowry, founder of Move For Hunger, “Every 1.2 pounds of food can provide one meal to one person.” Lowry knows first-hand what a difference food can make. Lowry founded Move For Hunger in 2009. His family owned a moving company in New Jersey for over 90 years. After years of seeing so much food wasted when people move, Adam decided to take action and raise awareness about this crisis with the hopes of collecting more pounds of food to donate. To date, Move For Hunger partners have delivered over 2,914,789 meals to food banks across North America.

When donating food, Beverly recommends packing unwanted, non-perishable items that have not expired. Some suggested items include canned vegetables, fruits, stews, soups, beans and tuna, pasta, sauces, baby food, dry beans, flour, cereal, oatmeal, juice, rice, peanut butter and jelly.
