MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- Sheriff Tommy Gage and the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) are monitoring Hurricane Gustav as it nears the Gulf of Mexico.

Gage and OEM would like to remind everyone of a few simple steps to take should Montgomery County be affected in the coming days by Gustav.

Awareness and preparation are the keys to surviving a hurricane and returning to normal as soon as possible if a hurricane strikes our area. Montgomery County residents should have in place an emergency preparedness plan and supplies. The Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management offers the following basic tips:

Prepare an Emergency Kit that includes: Three gallons of water, per person, per day; non-perishable food items; first aid kit; flashlight and extra batteries; change of clothes; prescriptions; important documents; cash and any items needed for special situations; i.e., disabilities, pets or infants.

Keep you gas tank full - It is recommended that resident in coastal and inland areas keep their cars gas tanks full due to the possibility that gas stations may run out of fuel in hurricane situations.

Stay Informed - In the come days keep up with weather forecasts and possible tracks Hurricane Gustav may take.  At this point, hurricane models have forecasted Gustav's track to make landfall anywhere from Mexico to Florida as a Category 3 - 5.  This means that our area could be heavily impacted.

Due to the timeliness of this storm many preparedness actions will be taking place over Labor Day weekend. Please keep this in mind as you plan your activities. In the event of an evacuation of the Houston/Galveston Area, residents may not be able to return home from out of town destinations due to contra-flow or evacuation issues. If you have plans for the holiday that involve traveling out of town, please pack all necessities you or your family will need in the event you are unable to return.

The Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will continue to monitor this storm and will coordinate with county, regional and state officials to take any preparedness steps necessary to ensure the safety of the citizens in Montgomery County. The OEM will be periodically posting information concerning Hurricane Gustav to their website, which can be found at the link below .
