GMCRA achieves independent chapter status from the Texas Restaurant Association.
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The Greater Montgomery County Restaurant Association has been proclaimed an independent chapter by the Texas Restaurant Association this week. The vision of Dawn Candy when serving as team leader for the Chamber’s 2008 Taste of the Town event, she conceived the idea by virtue of the volume of restaurants that participated, approximately eighty eating establishments. A ‘grass roots’ effort was spawned, and teaming up with Alaire Cordeiro of the Cordeiro Group, the Greater Montgomery County Restaurant Association was formed under the umbrella of the Greater Houston Restaurant Association. Now, having fulfilled the necessary requirements of forming a board, by-laws, and membership growth and retention, it has received the distinction of being an independent chapter. Dawn Candy serves on the board as Secretary; Alaire Cordeiro is serving as Treasurer.
The GMCRA hosts quarterly membership activities to keep members in-the-loop on what’s happening in the industry, while allowing them to network and enjoy gourmet cuisine with fellow friends in the business. When asked if the restaurant report issued by the Montgomery County Health Department was showing a decrease in the demerits since the formation of the GMCRA, Dawn Candy replied, “It’s difficult to tell, but if the restaurants are members of the chapter, we can keep them informed and possibly lessen their chances of being cited for infractions.”
On April 29th, the GMCRA will host a fundraiser for their scholarship program. The President’s Dinner will honor their inaugural president, Imran Iqbal, the owner of the Rico’s chain of restaurants in The Woodlands, and will be a celebration of becoming an independent chapter. The dinner will be held at The Grand Palace located at 314 A Pruitt Road; tickets are $50 apiece, and sponsorships are available.
Another interesting event that has sprung out of the GMCRA is the Thanksgiving Cup Soccer Tournament with 12 local restaurant teams competing. The tournament is held on Thanksgiving Day, one of the few days of the year that most restaurants are closed, and attracts approximately 300 spectators. Thanksgiving dinners are put on the back burner until the tournament is over; after all, bragging rights are at stake. When did you realize you were grown up? Most people will reply…when they got to sit at the big table on Thanksgiving. The Greater Montgomery County Restaurant Association finally gets to sit at the big table.
