MCUW Updates on Ike Recovery
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Due to Montgomery County United Way receiving $3.1 million in grant funds from HGAC SSBG (Social Services Block Grant), some area citizens and organizations have been able to recover and renew after Hurricane Ike.
While most of Montgomery County citizens picked up the pieces of debris and had roofs repaired, some of our citizens are still unable to forge ahead with their lives.
Amal Kuglar of The Woodlands had roof damage from the storm. After FEMA’s contribution and because of problems with her home owner’s insurance policy, she was not able to repair her roof on her own. After MCUW was able to make the necessary repairs through the SSBG grant, Ms. Kuglar said “Words will not be enough to express how happy I am to have my house so beautiful again.”
Montgomery County Food Bank, who provides over 4.5 million pounds of food and supplies to area food pantries each year, also suffered roof damage. MCUW SSBG grant funds paid for roof repair. According to Food Bank Director Doris Goleman “Without this grant available to Montgomery County United Way to help area residents and non-profits recover, we would not have been able to repair our roof It was essential to keep our food dry so we could help people in need in our community.”
To date, Montgomery County United Way has assisted 3 homeowners with doors, roof repair, cornice work, siding and/or sheet rock repairs with another 20 cases being reviewed and another 3 homeowners receiving items such as dentures and assistance with rental for a FEMA trailer with another 7 cases in review.
Dan Huffaker, Montgomery County United Way’s Ike Construction Manager said “helping these people fulfills the heart side of my professional talents. We are providing tremendous security and safety for some of these homeowners who have had the chance of rain inside their homes for over 17 months. Finally, they can escape the rain and get on with their lives.”
In order to receive assistance through the MCUW SSBG grant, homeowners must be connected to a disaster case worker through RISE (Recovery for Ike Survivors Enterprise). To register for case management, call 1-888-IKE-RISE.
