THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The South Montgomery County YMCA recently held a Community Capital Campaign Kickoff for their newest location in the village of Creekside Park. The event was held on Saturday, March 6, on the 21 acre recreation site and included a light lunch, facility tours, hayrides, and horseback rides for the kids.

The Creekside YMCA Outdoor Adventure Center is set to open in June of 2010, and their focus will be outdoor recreation. Their main goal is to reconnect kids and their families with nature. This should not be a problem with an outdoor adventure center adjacent to the 1700 acre George Mitchell Nature Preserve.

The Creekside YMCA will offer the community an outdoor amphitheater with a stage and seating for 500 people, an archery range, a 50 foot Alpine Tower with a zip line and climbing wall, 12 themed tree houses between 8 and 20 feet off the ground, a teepee village with nine thirty foot tall teepees, and the site will even have an outdoor chapel located 20 feet off the ground.

South Montgomery County YMCA Executive Director Darwin Barnett had this to say about the future site: "It's amazing that we live in a wooded area, yet our kids are not given an opportunity to be in the woods. With this in mind, we asked ourselves how we could achieve that without having to send kids away to camp. This is exactly what we hope to achieve with this facility."

At the center of this amazing outdoor adventure center, will sit a 14,000 square foot lodge style building, with an outdoor patio and fireplace. Bruce Tough, a member of The YMCA Capital Development Team, had the distinct privilege of announcing the naming of the future lodge which will be called "The Kevin Brady Family Lodge" after Congressman Brady, who was in attendance with his family.

The Creekside YMCA Outdoor Adventure Center will not come without cost though. With nearly $10 million dollars left to be raised for this facility, the YMCA is looking to their community for support.

Joe Michels, Chairman of The YMCA Capital Development Team, set out his plea for assistance. "For every dime we have to borrow, there is fifteen Cents we have to pay back," said Michels. "The more we have to borrow, the less we can provide to our families." Michels also reinforced the need for such a facility today. "In a world where drugs, divorce and social stresses attack our families, the YMCA is in the business of building families up.”We want to get our kids away from their cell phones and video games and get them in the stillness where they can hear the still small voice of God."

The day’s events concluded with the raising of the American Flag by local Boy Scouts.
