THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The Woodlands High School has dominated District 14-5A opponents in almost every sport during the 2009-2010 calendar year.

It’s time to add softball to the list.

Freshman pitcher Kristen Clark shook off some first-inning jitters to lead the Lady Highlanders to an easy 11-1 victory over Lufkin in a District 14-5A game Monday at The Woodlands High School.

The Lady Highlanders now are 21-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in 14-5A play. They next will host New Caney at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“I thought we would have a good team coming into the season,’’ said the petite Clark, who has a devastating changeup. “But 21-1? That is really good.’’

The Lady Highlanders’ only defeat to date was a 1-0 loss to Ft. Bend Clements in the Sienna Plantation tournament.

The Woodlands also has defeated College Park 11-0, Oak Ridge 4-1 and Conroe 3-1 in conference play.

“This game was really fun and exciting,’’ added Clark, who has rotated at pitcher with Paige McDuffie during the 2010 season. “It took awhile for our defense to get going, but then our bats got on a roll.’’

Lufkin jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a single and a double. But the Lady Panthers would get only one more hit for the rest of the five-inning game.

The Woodlands, meanwhile, responded with nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kelsey Jolly had a two-RBI single and Lizzi Arana and Jessica Snider both had RBI singles in the onslaught.

Snider also made a couple of sparkling plays at third base in the third inning to thwart any hopes of a Lufkin comeback. “I just had to settle down (after the first inning),’’ said Clark, who also is one of the best baserunners on the team. “Then, we seemed to get everything going.’’

Clark singled in the second and later scored to make it 10-1, and Courtney Wilganowski plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the third.

The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

“We just have to try and keep it going,’’ said Clark. “It has been a great season up to this point.’’
