THE WOODLANDS, Texas – And then there was one.

The Woodlands High School boys’ basketball team, by virtue of its convincing 59-39 victory at home over Kingwood Friday, is the only team left unbeaten in District 14-5A play.

Garrett Colonna scored 16 points and Brandon Caporale added 10 more as the Highlanders improved to 4-0 in district play and 21-3 overall with a solid team effort.

“That was a huge win,” The Woodlands coach Dale Reed said. “Kingwood, being the other 3-0 team in the district, I was really glad that our guys came out with a focus. And again we got off to a great start.

“And when we do that, it puts that pressure on Kingwood to have to come chase us and have to do some things that they don’t necessarily want to.

“I loved our focus.”

The Highlanders jumped out to an 18-8 lead at the quarter and took control early.

“We hit some shots early,” Reed said. “Garrett Colonna, again, hit some real big shots. And some other guys stepped up and we did a good job of getting it inside, getting it outside.

“I loved our defensive intensity. I thought we got some easy baskets because of our defense.”

The Highlanders ran away in the fourth quarter, using an 18-7 advantage extend a 41-32 lead.

“In our zone defense there were a couple of times where we were a little bit late, and Kingwood’s got some great shooters, and when you’re a little late, those good shooters knock them down,” Reed said. “And that’s what kept the game within reach for them.

“We switched to man-to-man and really got after them. And it made it hard for them to get those open shots. Therefore they started missing some of those.”

Kingwood fell to 3-1 in district play and 16-9 overall. The Mustangs are the only team with just one loss. The other five teams in the district have at least two losses.
