Oak Ridge holds off Conroe
OAK RIDGE NORTH, Texas – It was good just to get a “W” in the books.
Oak Ridge High School boys’ basketball earned a District 14-5A victory on Friday, turning back visiting Conroe 60-45 at Eagles Nest.
“I think it was 2011, the last time we won a game, Dec. 30, as a matter of fact,” War Eagles coach Rob Stewart said. “It was really good. We’ve been close a couple of times but we just haven’t been able to put it away. Man, it feels good.”
Stewart said the difference was simple, “We made shots,” he said. “It’s probably politically incorrect but we always talk about ‘killing the bunnies’ because the ‘bunnies’ are the easy shots. We killed the bunnies tonight.
“We got the shots we wanted and we made them, and that was the difference. We’ve been getting the shots we wanted, we haven’t been making very many of them - tonight we did.”
Josh Caldwell led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points. He was one of three War Eagles to score in double figures. Tanner Doyel added 12 points and Brent Burress finished with 10 points.
Oak Ridge jumped out to a 14-3 lead at the quarter and held a 34-18 advantage by halftime.
Over in Kingwood, No. 25 state-ranked College Park came away with a 55-51 victory. Evan Cooper scored 15 points to lead the way along with Zach Wright (8-for-8 free throws) and Layton Zinsmeister, who scored 14 and 11 points respectively.
