Souper Bowl of Caring on Super Bowl weekend
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas - Community support is needed to assist the Montgomery County Food Bank in the battle for hunger as the countdown to the Super Bowl weekend approaches. Area residents have already contributed 13,858 pounds of food since January 11, the kick-off date across the country. Souper Bowl of Caring in Montgomery County is a partnership between area congregations, school and businesses, food retailers H-E-B, Kroger, and Randalls Food Markets, the Tall Timber District Scouts, and the George Strake District Scouts. Century 21 is also participating in The Woodlands and Magnolia offices.
Pre-made bags are available at Kroger, H-E-B, and Randalls Food Markets, or customers can pick up a donation card at the checkout location before they leave. Every red barrel in Montgomery County is either picked up by one of the partnering agency pantries or the MCFB.
“As people across the country watch the Giants take on the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, there is tremendous opportunity to harness this energy and direct it to caring for people who are hungry in the community through Souper Bowl of Caring,” said Tracy Bender, President and CEO of Souper Bowl of Caring. “We may not know who will win the game, but local charities can win big if everyone will give generously to help our neighbors in need.”
Souper Bowl of Caring is a national youth-led movement of schools, congregations, community organizations and compassionate individuals joining together to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities, transforming the time around the Super Bowl into the nation's largest celebration of giving and serving. Since the program started in 1990, volunteers have collected more than $81 million in dollars and cans, with 100 percent of all donations going directly to community food banks, soup kitchens or other charities chosen by each group. The mission of the Montgomery County Food Bank is “Feed the Hungry of Montgomery County”. As the County’s largest hunger relief charity, the MCFB addresses hunger in all of its forms. Our 50 member agencies fulfill over 30,000 food requests each month, with 40% children and 10% seniors. The MCFB survives on monetary and food donations, grants, and volunteers. It takes approximately 1500 volunteer hours a month to sort, box, and weigh the food for delivery. In 2011 the MCFB distributed nearly 6 million pounds of food and grocery product.
