Carr, Schmid earn top 14-5A football honors

The All-District 14-5A Football Team has been released. As expected, tri-champions The Woodlands, Lufkin and A&M Consolidated dominated the list. But standouts from College Park and Oak Ridge were also recognized.

Head coaches from the three district tri-champs shared the honor of Coach of the Year. The Woodlands’ Mark Schmid is among the group. Schmid won Coach of the Year honor for the third time (2008, 09, 12) after leading the Highlanders to the playoffs in all eight seasons as the Highlanders’ head coach.

The Woodlands High School sophomore running back Patrick Carr was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Carr rushed for more than 2,000 yards and over 20 touchdowns in helping lead the Highlanders to an 8-4 season.

Oak Ridge High School senior Xavier Richardson was named the district’s top Return Specialist. Richardson returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the waning seconds of the War Eagles’ victory over College Park.

The Woodlands Highlanders senior quarterback Blaine Gillespie earned First Team honors as did senior receivers Houston Brown and Jayme Taylor, along with linemen Sam Kronshage (senior) and Tyler Rapp (junior).

Four standouts from the College Park High School football team earned First Team honors as well. Seniors Connor McPherson (fullback), Charrod Henry (wide receiver) and Chad Murski (line) made the first team along with junior Jayden Holden (tight end).

The Woodlands and Oak Ridge had four players each on the First Team Defense and College Park added two more. Highlanders seniors Clayton Lowell (line), Chase Jordan (CB) and Zach Dunn (DS) were first-team selections along with junior Tyler Patrick (safety).

War Eagles seniors Matt Mitchell (LB), Germod Williams (safety) and Francisco Ashford (punter) were named to the first team along with junior Tyler Marcel (CB).

Cavaliers juniors Tristan Newman (LB) and Eric Harrell (safety) made the First Team as well.

Five from The Woodlands were named to the Second Team Offense. Senior linemen Jonathan Huckins and Josh Hermsen, along with senior kicker Alex Garcia made the list, along with junior receivers Sean McCanna and Bayley Novak.

Another four were named to the Second Team Defense. Seniors Cole Little (LB) and Kolbi Brown (CB) along with juniors Sean Johnson (line) and Tanner Birdsong (LB) made the list.

Seniors Cody Burkett (line) and Chris Warren (WR) made Honorable Mention Offense while seniors Matt Miller (line) and Christian Canion (safety), as well as junior Zach Krolcyzk (line) and sophomore Brandon Barnett (LB) made the Honorable Mention Defense list.

Four Oak Ridge standouts were named to the Second Team Offense. Seniors Connor Waldron (line) and Colby Kitterman (receiver), along with junior Grant Homrighaus (line) and sophomore Kwame Etwi (RB) made the list.

War Eagles sophomores John Williams (line) and Teangelo Pierre (CB) made the Second Team Defense.

Oak Ridge senior linemen Taylor Dye and Shea Potts made the Honorable Mention Offense along with junior wide receivers Jamarqus Durst and DeMarcus Durst.

Seniors Justin Latonero (line), Tye Chalker (line) and Dillon Dye (LB), as well as junior Clayton Grett (LB) and sophomore Llewelldyn Jones (safety) made the Honorable Mention Defense.

College Park senior quarterback Brett Buckley, who underwent knee surgery Thursday morning, was named to the Second Team Offense along with junior running back Nick Black.

Cavaliers senior Austin Fredrickson (LB) made Second Team Defense along with juniors Jayvon Jackson (line), Alex Myres (CB), and Stephan Johnson (safety).

College Park senior Bryon Makel (receiver) and sophomores Ben Shepard (line) and Chris Barnes were named to the Honorable Mention Offense. Senior linebackers Scott Foster and Jacob McClean made the Honorable Mention Defense.
