THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- After a year in business the Hummingbird Tea Room & Bakery is pleased to announce that they are still open for business and will soon be celebrating their first year anniversary on June 6. Inaccurately reported in social media that the restaurant had closed, owner, Nasim Bell, reaches out to the community to spread the word.
Rumors dispelled about restaurant closing.

“Business has been good for the past year and steadily increasing,” said Bell. “We get calls daily for special bakery orders, or to host tea parties.”

A penchant for tea and sweet treats led Bell to open up the only tea room in The Woodlands.

“I grew up drinking tea and baguettes in Zambia,” said Bell. “Friends and family planted the seed that I open a tea room when we moved to The Woodlands eight years ago, and the seed grew.”

The Hummingbird Tea Room & Bakery is located at 30420 FM 2978 in the Colonnade Shopping Center, west of The Woodlands, and equidistant between FM 1488 and FM 2920.

“The Strawberry Salad is very popular,” said Ginny Wegner, who was busy multi-tasking behind the counter. According to Wegner the Chicken Waldorf salad is the most popular though. This was validated by customer, Denise Bain, a Keller Williams realtor who was enjoying her coffee and coffee cake on the plant-lined patio.

“I’m addicted to the Chicken Waldorf salad and the coffee cake,” said Bain. “I just love them!”

Popular among the bakery items is their signature “Hummingbird” cake, a banana, pineapple, and cinnamon spice cake. The cake has been a tradition in the southern United States since the mid 19th century. First publicized in “Southern Living” in the February 1978 edition by L.H. Wiggin, it was elected the magazine's favorite recipe in 1990, and won the Favorite Cake Award at the 1978 Kentucky State Fair. This cake is not easy to make and harder to find in a bakery, but it’s available at the Hummingbird Tea Room & Bakery.

“We use the finest ingredients which include cage-free eggs delivered fresh from Tomball,” said Bell. “The cage-free eggs just enhance the flavor of our baked goods, and our quiches and omelets.”

Customer, Lia Reagan, dropped in to purchase blueberry and coffee streusels for the teachers at the Woodlands Preparatory School for ‘sweets day’ on Wednesday, the third day of National Teachers Week.

“I’m so glad you’re here. You’re fabulous,” said Reagan to Bell as she exited with a stack of pastry boxes.

For customers with specific dietary requirements, gluten-free products are available, and even a Vegan baguette. Other offerings include gift baskets, catering, and celebration cakes. Unique to their restaurant’s business, or any business for that matter, is the Hummingbird’s commitment to buy U.S. made products. The hardwood floors and tiles were made in the United States; the tables are made from reclaimed wood from Oregon. Their mission is to use locally grown produce from community-supported farms. They’re all about sustainability, which is why they’re still sustaining their business a year after they opened.
