Spellabration Event raises funds for Literacy Volunteers of America
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- Fifteen teams of brave adult spellers, representing a variety of Montgomery County businesses and organizations, gathered on Friday, April 26, to raise money for Literacy Volunteers of America - Montgomery County (LVA-MC).
LVA, a non-profit organization that provides literacy training in Montgomery County, has hosted the Adult Spelling Bee Spellabration since 2003. This year’s event took place at The Woodlands United Methodist Church, 2200 Lake Woodlands Dr., The Woodlands.
This year’s Spellabration was won by the LVA Terrific Tutors team, comprised of Sharon Gee, Louise Mol & Ellen Benodin. Competition was intense and many teams went to the finals, but the Terrific Tutors spelled on to the end winning by correctly spelling WHINGE.
“This is our 11th Annual Spellabration Spelling Bee, and it is a great way to raise money and have lots of fun at the same time,” said Dr. Shelley McCoy, current LVA-MC president.
Income from this fun fund-raiser totaled almost $4,000.00. This year the teams of three spellers participating in the Spellabration were Interfaith of The Woodlands, Roy’s Auto Service, Montgomery County Memorial Library, Lone Star College-Montgomery, Lone Star College Kingwood, Rotary of The Woodlands, Rotary of Lake Conroe, Rotary Club of East Montgomery County, Montgomery County Association of Retired School Personnel, LVA-MC, Good Books in The Woods and Friends of LVA teams.
The Mission of LVA-MC is to engage, educate and empower our community to fight poverty and improve the quality of life through adult literacy. LVA-MC provides tutoring in adult basic education, English-as-a-Second-Language training, pre-GED services and workplace literacy.
