MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- Each year Montgomery County United Way, as a member of the Montgomery County Women’s Council of Organizations, celebrates and honors a volunteer who has truly represented what it means to Live United, by giving, advocating and volunteering.

This year, Montgomery County United Way recognizes Tamara Walker, as their 2013 Woman of Distinction. Tamara Walker is currently an education specialist at Region VI Education Service Center and an adjunct lecturer at Sam Houston State University. She is active in Montgomery County United Way serving on the steering committee of the Woman’s Leadership Council, the Responding to Crisis Council, the Creating Independence Impact Council and as a facilitator for Strategic Investment. Tammy was instrumental in developing the “Helping Moms” scholarship and was an original member of the "Success By Six" committee.

Tammy also serves on the board of the Conroe Family YMCA and the Sam Houston Association for the Education of Young Children. While principal at Creighton Elementary in Conroe, she and her staff partnered with the YMCA to develop and pilot the highly successful "Destination YMCA" program aimed at helping students set and meet academic and social goals. In her 35 years as an educator, she has been a teacher, librarian, assistant principal, principal, and mentor.

Tammy lives outside of Montgomery in her dream home. She is married to Jack Walker and is the mother of two grown daughters, Danna Apolloni and Amy Cieciorka, and four grandchildren, Megan, Courtney, Hailey and A.J. Apolloni. While her family is her number one priority, her passion is learning and teaching. Tammy reflects back on a quote by Emma Goldman “No one has yet realized the wealth of sympathy, the kindness and generosity hidden in the soul of a child. The effort of every true education should be to unlock that treasure.”

Congratulations Tammy and thank you for admirable contributions to our county and for nurturing and developing our children; the leaders of tomorrow.
