THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- With the start of school, sports teams return from summer hiatus. One sport often overlooked in our area is field hockey. Field hockey is primarily a northeastern sport due to the cooler weather during the season the sport is played. However, the hot Texas weather does not stop The Woodlands Girls Field Hockey Club from playing the sport that they love.

Few people know about the field hockey, although it is quite unique. “If you combined the excitement of Ice Hockey, the positions and strategy of Soccer, the ball of a crocket set, and mix in a little Cross Country stamina; you’ll find yourself in the middle of what we call field hockey,” said Coach Jeannie Holbert. Holbert is the new coach for the club, but is not new to the sport; she played at both a high school and college level. She brings new goals and expectations and plans to push the team further than they have been in previous seasons.

“I for one am excited to see how all of our hard work during the pre-season training will pay off, we have gotten many new girls that will be great assets to the team.” Goalie, Macey Normyle said. “I believe this season is very promising.” Normyle has been playing the sport since she was in the seventh grade and is excited to be leading the team her senior year at The Woodlands High School.

New players are important to the club because that is what keeps the club active throughout the years. “I love getting to play such a neat sport with a new group of girls, everyone has been welcoming and I’m ready to see what the season brings,” said Sophie Perquin, a new team addition. Perquin is a sophomore at TWHS, the clubs affiliate school.

The team finished the previous season with a win against longtime rival Duchesne, and hopes to keep this season going with many victories.
