TOMBALL, Texas – The Woodlands High School volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in the state and in the nation, made its first stop on the UIL 5A state high school playoff line a successful one at Tomball High School, Tuesday. The Lady Highlanders soundly defeated Klein Collins, 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-11).

Kendall Cook served The Woodlands (39-0), now 18-0 on a neutral site, to a quick 5-0 advantage.

Lady Tigers Madi Molitor and Karlie Greene answered with a kill each before Rachel Reed stepped to the service line and engineered seven straight points to steam The Woodlands to a 13-2 lead. Reed had a little assistance as Madison McDaniel contributed three kills and Morgan Eason added another. The Courtney Eckenrode assist machine was in working order once again with 31 for the match.

The Woodlands' Lexi Schnakenburg got in on the act flexing her muscles with a couple slams and the Lady Highlanders were up 20-6. Molitor hit a picture perfect dump to score Klein Collins’ last point of the set. Cook wrapped things up at the service line conducting the last five points of the set to put her total to 10.

Cook and Reed combined for 17 service points in the first stanza.

The Lady Tigers gave The Woodlands all they could handle in the early stages of the second set. Tabitha Brown and Greene combined for three blocks and a Laurel Adams kill had Klein Collins within three points, 13-10, of The Woodlands.

McDaniel and Courtney Quinn took over, however, ruling the net and combining for 10 kills and three blocks. Kelly Quinn rattled off eight straight service points to add an exclamation point.

Lady Tigers Libero, Alyssa Carruth and teammate Kelly Farina kept Klein Collins in the early part of the final game. But Schnakenburg had three late kills and Eason slammed the 25th point home.

The Woodlands volleyball coach Leslie Madison was exuberant with the way her team played.

"It's nice to play and play well,” Madison said. “They executed the game plan and I'm real proud of the way they played. We came out with a lot of enthusiasm and it's really hard for the other team to recover when you do that. The girls did an awesome job."

McDaniel and Quinn (11 digs) had 16 and 14 kills in order. Kelly Quinn had 17 digs to go along with 11 for Eckenrode and nine for McDaniel.

The Woodlands’ second-round match will be against Pflugerville-Hendrickson (27-9, 10-1 neutral) on Thursday, Nov. 7, at a site and time to be determined.
