THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- A romantic evening out on Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a hair-raising event unless you choose to do an ‘updo,’ but the 2014 hair trends indicate that long hair is still very much in vogue. Beauty bloggers are posting about how the models were styled at Fashion Week and long hair with a center part was the most consistent trend.

The 2014 hair trends for your Valentine's Day date night.

How the long hair is worn will vary slightly based on trendsetters and stylists. First Lady Michelle Obama created a sensation with her bangs. Worn down or pulled back in a ponytail, bangs are back with a bang. Ponytails this year are being worn at the nape of the neck, either in the center or swept to the side. Although sleek is the ‘look,’ a ponytail is an excellent way to reign in a wild mane of hair.

Hopefully you’re adept at braiding your hair. Braids are the most popular hair accent; either long, across the crown of the head, or in a braided bun. Another major emphasis is on the accents. For an evening out, no matter how casual or disheveled the hair, an ornament will dress up your look. Decorative hairbands and jeweled combs and hair picks take a day look into the night. As the fourth season of the popular PBS Masterpiece “Downton Abbey” moves from the post World War I period into the Roaring 20s, look for headbands worn across the forehead ‘flapper’ style to become a popular hair accessory. According to popular bloggers, hair accessories should be one of the hottest trends, after all, it’s one more place to wear jewelry.

To make sure your evening ‘do’ isn’t a ‘don’t,’ get the split ends trimmed, roots touched up, and consult with your hair stylist on how to update your look. A skilled hair stylist will let you know if your hairstyle flatters your face or if your hair texture is becoming in the style you’re wearing it. Trade secrets on voluminizing thin hair, curling straight hair, or straightening curly hair, are yours for the asking.

For a romantic updo, don’t try this at home! There’s nothing more embarrassing than to have your upswept hair come tumbling down during the main course. To prevent your updo from coming down, leave it to the professionals. To look your best when dining with your beloved this Valentine’s Day, schedule an appointment with trend-setting salons like Flair Salon and Spa or Village Cuts, both conveniently located in The Woodlands. Although you’ll want to get your hair done the day of your ‘big’ night, it’s best to book the appointment at least two weeks in advance. Don’t be outdone by having to do your hair yourself, and coming undone.
