Walt Crowder, owner of The Lawn Ranger, didn’t always know he wanted to start a lawn business. In 1995, Crowder was a school administrator and started mowing lawns during the summer. After working indoors for 25 years, the 48-year old was just happy to be out in the sun during the summer months. It wasn’t long before he got a call from a local management company who offered to give him properties that he could mow. By the end of the summer in 1995, Crowder’s business was growing, but his mowing equipment was worn out. He had a decision to make. He could either go back to his educational job, or buy better equipment for his growing lawn business. Crowder chose the latter, and in order to offer more services than just mowing lawns, he took classes on landscaping and gardening. He was soon able to hire a full-time landscaper, and ever since, The Lawn Ranger has been a full-service fertilization, landscape, and lawn maintenance company that has been serving The Woodlands and surrounding areas.

At the Lawn Ranger Company, there are now three different divisions in order to meet every customer’s need. The fertilization program, also known as ‘The Green Lawn System’ is a year-round service that provides care for a resident’s lawn, turf, shrubs and ornamentals so that they have the greenest and healthiest lawn on the block. The lawn maintenance division includes mowing, shrub trimming, lawn and landscape maintenance programs, and irrigation system checks. The third division is all about landscaping. “If anyone calls to request an estimate, we can give them a price right away from our database because it is already measured,” said Crowder.

Spring is the busiest season for The Lawn Ranger because people are thinking about new gardens, new flowers and enhancing their landscape. Each month, including March, the landscape company gives gardening tips for a healthy and beautiful lawn that can be seen on their blog. Since there will probably not be another freeze, Crowder recommends to go ahead and start planting spring flowers.

“This is the time plants are going to start growing rapidly so they need food and water,” said Crowder. “This is also a good time to plant shrubs so they get a burst of color for the spring.”
