LUFKIN, Texas – It looked like business as usual for The Woodlands High School baseball team on Friday in its District 14-5A road encounter with the Lufkin Panthers. The Highlanders scored a run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead while looking to extend its 14-game win streak.

And despite an outstanding effort on the mound from starter Luke Sherley, who struck out nine, did not walk a batter, and scattered seven hits over six innings of work, the Highlanders (22-4, 8-1) were unable to push across another run and dropped a 2-1 decision.

Colton Wardle delivered two hits and drove in a run to lead The Woodlands’ seven-hit attack. Chris Andritsos added two hits, including a first-inning triple, and scored a run. Wardle followed Andritsos’ three-bagger with an RBI-double and it appeared as though the Highlanders were off and running.

Aaron Milone belted a one-out double in the third inning and stole third, but was stranded. The Woodlands loaded the bases in the fourth inning with one out, but could not get a clutch hit and did not threaten the rest of the way.

Sherley and Mark Doerries also came up with one hit apiece.

Lufkin countered with single markers in the fourth and sixth innings.

Despite their first District 14-5A loss of the season the Highlanders remain in first place, one game ahead of both College Park and Bryan.

The Woodlands hosts Bryan at 7 p.m. Thursday at Scotland Yard.
