Insperity Invitational in The Woodlands to feature stellar field of golfers and great weather

THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The Insperity Invitational golf tournament in The Woodlands will feature a steller field of golfers and great weather. The morning temperatures Friday through Sunday will be approximately sixty degrees, with mid-day temperatures averaging in the mid-70s...perfect golf weather for the tournament.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas—Fred Couples will crank up the Texas heat next week when he joins a stellar field of golf’s greatest names at the Insperity Invitational presented by UnitedHealthcare, April 28 – May 4, 2014, at The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course.


A Champions Tour event, the Insperity Invitational presented by UnitedHealthcare features the world’s premier golfers age 50 and older. Last year’s tournament winner Esteban Toledo, will also be returning to the Insperity Invitational to defend his title and play for a purse of $2 million.

Fresh off another strong showing at The Masters, proving the over-50 crowd can still pose a threat on all Tours, Couples will return to The Woodlands for the first time since 2011 when he tried to successfully defend his lone Insperity Invitational title. The University of Houston alumnus ran away with the 2010 tournament after firing a sizzling 63 on Sunday for a seven-shot victory.

“Fred Couples is a fan-favorite anywhere he tees it up, but given his Houston connection definitely elevates the anticipation of the event which already promises to be an exciting week,” said Bryan Naugle, executive director, Insperity Invitational. “Freddie’s recent success at The Masters clearly shows he is more than just a big name. He is still fiercely committed to winning, and continues to be one of the best in the game.”

A World Golf Hall of Fame member, the 54-year-old Couples is one of the feature attractions on the Champions Tour that showcases an assembly of golf’s legends. A winner of 57 professional tournaments, Couples won 15 times on the PGA TOUR including the 1992 Masters and the 2003 Houston Open.

Since he joined the Champions Tour in 2010, Couples has racked up 10 victories including two senior major titles.

"I have always enjoyed coming back to Houston having gone to school here, and where I have also had some success winning a couple of times,” said Couples. “The Insperity Invitational is highly regarded as one of the best events we play on Tour. We have another incredible field coming this year, and I hope the community will be able to enjoy watching some great golf at the Tournament Course. I know it will be another awesome week.”

Couples will be one of six World Golf Hall of Fame members currently in the all-star field of 81 Champions Tour professionals including: Tom Kite; Nick Price; Bernhard Langer; Curtis Strange; and Colin Montgomerie. The Champions Tour Player-of-the-Year for each of the last eight seasons since 2006 will also vie for the 2014 title including: Haas (2006, 2008); Loren Roberts (2007, 2009); Langer (2010); Tom Lehman (2011, 2012); and Kenny Perry (2013).
