Montgomery County Animal Shelter providing discounted microchips, free ID tags in July

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- The July 4th weekend resulted in a spike in drop-offs at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter, due to the fireworks celebrations. Some of the animals were probably beloved pets spooked by the noise, but regretfully, there was no way to reunite the pets with their families because they had no identification on them.

Although the shelter is diligent in posting photos to its website, the hours of separation are agonizing for both the pets and their owners until they’re reunited. The animal shelter is taking a proactive approach to expediting the family reunions, and at the same time, minimize expenses and overcrowded conditions.

For the duration of the month of July, the Montgomery County Animal Society of the Montgomery County Animal Shelter is offering FREE I.D. tags and $25 micro-chipping of pets at the shelter on SH 242, with NO limit on the number of pets. No appointments are necessary, seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We’re trying to reduce the number of animals in the shelter by trying to reunite as many as possible with their families,” said Minda Harris, the Director of the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. “Microchipping is the most effective way to do this. If animals are microchipped and wearing an ID tag, it helps reduce the number of animals put up for adoption.”

To make it affordable for everyone to have their pet microchipped, the animal shelter is offering the procedure at an amazingly low rate, less than half the usual cost. The procedure is fast and minimally invasive. The chip, about the size of a grain of rice (12mm), is inserted just beneath the pet’s skin surface between the shoulder blades. The process is similar to a routine shot and takes only a few seconds. It is no different than a routine vaccination, and no anesthetic is required.

The shelter also has volunteers at area ‘offsites,' Petco and PetSmart, in the Montgomery County area on Saturdays and Sundays. They are only set up to arrange adoptions, and accept donations like towels and monetary contributions; the ID tags and microchipping are only available at the animal shelter.

The Montgomery County Animal Shelter is located in the northeast corner of I-45N and Hwy. 242, just north of The Woodlands. From The Woodlands, turn right on SH 242 and make a U-turn under the first overpass on the right. From Conroe, turn left under I-45N, and proceed to the U-turn under the overpass. The shelter is on the right side feeder.

“We also want to remind pet owners not to leave their pets in the car during these hot summer months; not even for a ‘short’ time,” added Harris. “It doesn’t take pets long to suffer heatstroke and die in a hot car. Leave them at home when running errands.”
