The 10th annual YMCA Operation Backpack, Greater the area’s largest school supply drive, is gearing up to help more than 75,000 Greater Houston area children start the school year off right. The YMCA of Greater Houston is mobilizing 36 YMCAs, local churches and other community partners to help collect thousands of backpacks and school supplies for children who might otherwise head back to school unprepared. Since its inception, Operation Backpack has served more than 175,000 children.

Operation Backpack: Montgomery County YMCAs join local schools and churches to help children make the grade

This year, beginning July 18th through August 10th, YMCA Operation Backpack will collect brand new backpacks filled with school supplies and distribute them to children in 31 Houston area school districts including Conroe, Magnolia, Tomball and Willis ISDs. The 36 YMCA of Greater Houston facilities throughout the city, including the Montgomery County YMCAs will serve as collection sites for people to drop off backpacks and supplies.

“Many families just don’t have the money to buy the supplies their kids need to start the new school year off right”, said Roxanne Davis, YMCA Community Liaison. “To help meet the critical needs, many willing hearts are needed to assist with this project. Your investment provides these children the opportunity to start school with the resources they need to be successful. The young people you help by donating will develop stronger self-esteem and hope for a brighter future”.

To help, follow these simple steps:

Purchase a new backpack and/or school supplies

Write a note of encouragement to the child and place it in the backpack or supplies

Drop off the donation to one of the Y centers in Montgomery County or community partners

Enjoy the feeling of making a difference in the life of a child

Drop-off locations include all YMCA centers in The Woodlands, Conroe and Magnolia. Collection boxes can also be found at our community partners. For a complete list of drop off locations visit www.ymcaoperationbackpack.org. If your business or organization would like to be a collection site or make a donation, please contact Roxanne Davis, Community Liaison for the YMCA, 281-681-6730.
