CONROE, Texas - The 2014 football season officially kicked off for the newly minted 16-6A district at the Conroe Noons Lion Club event at the Lone Star Convention Center in Conroe, Texas. The coaches of the conference gathered to talk about their respective schools and the excitement they feel for the season ahead.

“It’s a new start, it’s fresh, and everyone get’s excited for the new year,” said The Woodlands College Park Head Coach Richard Carson.

One of the updates for the season is the UIL change to a 6A division, leading to a realignment of teams. Teams from the old 14-5A that didn’t transfer to the new league are Lufkin, A&M Consolidated, and Bryan High School. Moving from 14-5A to 16-6A are teams Oak Ridge, The Woodlands, College Park, and Conroe High Schools, respectively. Joining the new alignment is Summer Creek High School, Atascocita High School, and Kingwood High School.

Count head coach of The Woodlands Mark Schmid as someone who is upbeat about the realignment.

“One of the good things about the new district is there won’t be any more two-and-a half hour drives with the new district,” says Schmid. “Competition across the division is up.”

With training camps opening Monday for most schools, Head Coach for Oak Ridge, Dereck Rush, is getting ready for the grind of the season. “Whether the game is on Friday, Thursday, or Saturday this year, the games will be a fight for all four quarters,” said Rush.
