THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- You can never get too much of a good thing, and for residents traveling through Precinct 3, flashing-yellow turn signals are outstanding.

Left turns are one of the most challenging actions for drivers, and protected green left-turn lanes can lead to congestion on the roads. Commissioner James Noack’s office began to introduce the flashing-yellow left turn signals this spring to Precinct 3’s most notorious traffic bottlenecks in an effort to alleviate congestion in South Montgomery County. Heading into fall, Precinct 3 will see the benefits as Noack rolls out a third wave of flashing-yellow turn signals.

“We have had tremendous positive feedback on the traffic-flow improvements in affected intersections,” Noack said. “Our area is witnessing incredible growth and we are doing our best to keep up with the increase in traffic by streamlining as many intersections as we can.”

The flashing yellow left-turn signal frees drivers from a long wait for a green light. Instead they are permitted to proceed with caution in making a left turn—once they have yielded to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

In the latest group of flashing-yellow left turn signal rollouts, drivers will have the option to safely conduct a left turn on 14 new intersections. Affected intersections include Woodlands Parkway at Montfair and Player Woods Drive; Lake Woodlands Drive at East Panther Creek, Split Rock, and West Panther Creek; Grogan’s Mill Road at Timberloch Place, Riva Row, Lake Robbins and Lake Front Circle; Rayford Road at Geneva and Aldine Westfield; and Riley Fuzzel at Fox Run. Intersections on Research Forest Drive are still being reviewed for safety.

Precinct 3 is the most densely populated area of Montgomery County and with the growing popularity of The Woodlands and surrounding areas, mobility is a chief concern for Commissioner Noack. The flashing-yellow left-turn signal is growing in use nationwide, and Noack’s office has seen its benefits firsthand in smoother traffic flow for Precinct 3.
