HOUSTON, Texas – The College Park Cavaliers picked up their first win of the football season on Friday night at W.W. Thorne Stadium.

But the Cavaliers’ 35-28 victory over Aldine Davis did not come as easy as some fans thought it would. In fact, the Falcons gave the Cavs all they wanted before Richard Carson’s bunch was able to score the winning touchdown with 3:11 left in the game.

“Aldine Davis, they’re a new program and obviously we went through that being a first-year program,” Carson said in an interview earlier in the week. “They’re doing a great job with them. They’re well-coached. They’re still making some mistakes that first-year programs make, but overall their kids are really playing hard.”

College Park carried a 28-14 lead into the locker room at halftime when A.J. Sanders scored on a 4-yard run with only 37 seconds left in the second quarter. But the Cavs didn’t put away the game until Sanders scored on a 16- yard run with 3:11 left in the game.

Davis, which has athletes and playmakers all over the field, tied the game at 28-28, when silky smooth quarterback Isaac Jackson hit Joshua Vincent with a 3- yard touchdown pass with 9:33 left in the third quarter, and a 36-yard scoring strike with 9:11 left in the game.

After the second score, Lexington Thomas passed to Russell Duran for the two-point conversion.

“They’re very athletic,” Carson said before the game. “I think I say this every week, but they might be the most athletic team that we’ve faced. They can run. When they opened that school, they got a bunch of kids from Eisenhower and Nimitz, so they’ve got good athletes over there. They’re doing a good job, and they can run on both sides of the ball.”

The Cavaliers took the opening kickoff and marched 70 yards to grab a quick 7-0 lead. The drive was capped off by Sanders’ nifty 19-yard scoring run. The cat-quick speedster, who is a fantasy football player’s dream, finished the night 152 yards on 21 carries. He also caught a 61-yard pass.

Davis, though, answered with an eight-play, 74-yard touchdown drive to knot the game at 7-7. Jackson, who passed for 267 yards and three touchdowns, hit Darrell Hubbard with a 10-yard scoring toss. He would complete 9-of-18 passes on the night. He also had an interception.

“You’ve got to control their speed on both sides of the ball. When they’re on offense, they’ve got playmakers at running back, quarterback and receiver. They will hit big plays on you,” Carson said.

Nichols’ 1-yard scoring jaunt capped a 72-yard scoring drive to give College Park a 13-7 lead with 11:54 left in the half, but Davis came right back when Marcus Allen caught a 67-yard touchdown pass from Jackson. Ruben Chapa’s extra-point gave Davis its only lead of the night at 14-13.

Cavs quarterback Robert Ferguson gave College Park the lead again when he scored on a 1-yard run with 6:19 left in the second quarter. Nichols, who was holding for the extra point, then hit Roosevelt Henderson with a two-point pass to put the Cavs up 21-14.

Sanders’ 4-yard run made it 28-14 at intermission, but Davis would not quit. The Falcons, who are in their first year of playing varsity football, ended the game with 404 total yards, including 301 in the air.

College Park (1-3) had 344 total yards, including 239 on the ground.

Ferguson also rushed for 34 yards on seven carries, while Nichols had 29 yards on 14 carries. Ferguson also completed 4-of-6 passes for 105 yards.

Davis, which last week lost to Montgomery 33-23, dropped to 1-3 on the season.

“We just remind them every day we’re trying to get ready for district,” Carson said earlier in the week. “We look at the things that we can correct and we’re working hard at correcting them. The kids have had a great attitude. The focus is looking at the big picture. When non-district’s over, everybody’s 0-0.’’

College Park had lost to Pearland 25-14, Eisenhower 24-0 and Katy Taylor 14-13 before the win over Davis.

College Park will open District 16-6A play against Atascocita.
