LSC-Montgomery to participate in National Night Out with a week's worth of campus safety and fun

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Lone Star College-Montgomery safety and emergency training committee is teaming up with the office of student life to support National Night Out, an annual nationwide event to promote crime prevention, form police and community partnerships, and build neighborhood camaraderie to help combat crime, with a week’s worth of campus safety and fun during its first annual Campus Safety Week on October 6-9.

“Over the past year, our campus has put a strong emphasis on campus safety,” said Dr. Austin Lane, president of LSC-Montgomery. “Having a Campus Safety Week, including a Campus Night Out and a safety walk, helps bring everything into focus for our students, faculty and staff. It sends a strong message that we care about everyone's safety at LSC-Montgomery."

Kick off will take place on Monday, October 6, with the campus promoting the LoneStarAlert program, the colleges emergency alert notification system. This program allows faculty, staff, and students to be alerted via email and text of any campus emergency information. Students can update their critical contact information for LoneStarAlert any time during the day in the Commons (building A) on campus, or on their own throughout the week.

On Tuesday, October 7, faculty, staff, students, their families, and the community are invited to Campus Night Out. This family-friendly outdoor event will take place at Maverick Square (between buildings F and G) from 4-8 p.m. The evening will include booths, games, activities, free food, and more. There will be businesses, student organizations, and emergency response agencies ready to share information on a variety of safety topics. The night will wrap up with a campus safety walk, which will give walkers a chance to observe and make suggestions on how to make the campus safer.

“The Student Government Association does the safety walk twice a year,” said Michael Dailey, program manager for student life at LSC-Montgomery. “This is a great opportunity for students, police and administration to go all over campus and look for anything that might need to be improved for safety reasons.”

On Wednesday, October 8, there will be a Safety Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Commons (building A) on the LSC-Montgomery campus. Vendors and agencies will be offering information and giveaways at the fair on a wide variety of safety topics including self-defense, health, outdoor and electrical safety, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and identity theft. This is a chance to learn about the latest in personal safety, win door prizes and enjoy a free lunch.

The week will wrap up on Thursday, October 9, with a second safety fair at LSC-Conroe Center, where a variety of safety topics will be covered and there will be a free lunch. LSC-Montgomery will again promote sign up for the LoneStarAlert program.

“It’s really rewarding to be able to bring our nighttime students together with our daytime students so that they can meet and participate in events,” said Ana Maria Colchado, student life coordinator at LSC-Montgomery. “They will learn about safety on and off campus. It’s going to be a wonderful week.”
