THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- In the most anticipated volleyball matchup of the season, The Woodlands Lady Highlanders (25-2, 3-0) will take on the high-flying Oak Ridge Lady War Eagles (24-3, 4-0), Friday evening at The Woodlands high school campus.

District volleyball teams to play to their strengths.

Both teams are undefeated in District 16-6A play, with TWHS ranked 18th nationally, 8th in the state, and eighteen straight wins; losing only 1 set in that winning streak to College Park last week.

Oak Ridge, ranked 65th nationally and 24th in the state, has nine straight wins and stats that surpass The Highlanders, with few exceptions. Here’s how they stack up statistically, going into Friday night’s game.

The Woodlands has twice the number of blocks than Oak Ridge, and a higher hitting percentage. The Lady War Eagles have their work cut out for them. Their higher percentage of serving aces will serve them well if they can exploit a weak spot...that is, if there is a weak spot on The Woodlands side of the net.

Oak Ridge is strong on defense with more digs per set. The team had 55 against a strong College Park team, with Raigen Cianciulli responsible for almost half of them. Her involvement in almost every play of the game garnered ‘Player of the Game’ honors.

After the Tuesday night game against a strong College Park team, which Oak Ridge won in four sets 25-19, 28-26, 22-25, 26-24, Oak Ridge Head Coach Tommie Lynne Sledge promised another strong performance.

“We intend to do more of the same,” said Coach Sledge. “We’re going to be hard-hitting. We’re going to be all over the floor.”

While the two district rivals, Oak Ridge and College Park, battled it out across town, the Lady Highlanders finished easily in three sets over George Ranch 25-11, 25-11, 25-8.

The age old debate, whether it’s better to have an easy match before being tested to the max, or a tough game to prepare for an even tougher match, will be answered Friday night in one of the best volleyball contests of the season.

The statistics reveal that both teams are beating the national average in every category, which shows the strength of the district. The Woodlands will be out to maintain their extensive winning streak. Oak Ridge will be striving to prove that the best volleyball in the country is not limited to one school.
