LSC-Montgomery drama department presents Speech & Debate, Oct. 9-11

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Lone Star College-Montgomery’s drama department and Delta Psi Omega will present Stephen Karam’s Speech & Debate on October 9-11 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, October 11, at 3 p.m. Performances will be held in the college’s Black Box Theatre located in the Center of Arts, building D. In this play, three teenage misfits in Salem, OR, discover they are linked by a scandal that has rocked their town: exposing the truth about a teacher who preys on his male students. As they set out to expose the truth, the stakes get higher, secrets become currency, and the trio’s connection grows deeper in this coming-of-age, dark and wickedly hilarious comedy.

“There are moments in this show that some may find a bit shocking. The play addresses a number of volatile social issues but does so with heart and tenderness, capturing the human experience in a rare and remarkable way. The play supplies more questions than answers,” said director and drama professor Tim Campbell.

With a cast of four actors, this production offers challenging opportunities to both the actors and the production team. Rehearsals began immediately after auditions at the end of August. All production challenges were addressed quickly. With a small cast, the memory work for each actor was much greater than in the average large cast production.

“All but one of the actors in the cast is new to the drama department. We had a large turnout for auditions. Many students have worked on this project in some capacity, even if they are not officially in the cast or on the crew. We are thrilled with the influx of fiercely dedicated talent this fall,” said Campbell.

Speech & Debate is a part of the Actors Workshop series that the drama department puts on every year with support from Delta Psi Omega, the theatre honor society. The Actors Workshop series produces cutting-edge, captivating, and sometimes a bit risqué productions that are usually housed in the Black Box Theatre, on the second floor of the Center of the Arts, on the Montgomery campus. Speech & Debate is no exception.

“This play is very relevant for our student body,” said Campbell. “The act of seizing the truth, even if it means making great personal sacrifice, results in a story which every human being shares, regardless of one’s personal experience or perspective. The challenge of finding one’s own truth is common to all of us. This show tells the story with biting wit, humor, and wildly diverse, idiosyncratic characters.”

Audience members should be advised that this show contains excessive profanity and adult graphic situations. This show has the rating NC-17.
