THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Celebrating its tenth year of walking in The Woodlands, The Texas Gulf Coast chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will hold their annual Light the Night Walk on Market Street on Nov. 2. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. with live music, children’s activities, food and family fun. The Walk will follow at 6:30 p.m.

The Light The Night Walk is an annual fundraising campaign of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) that brings together families and communities to honor blood cancer survivors, as well as those lost to the diseases. The organization looks to ‘shine a light’ on the importance of finding cures and providing access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

The two mile walk begins at Lake Robbins Drive, then heads up the Waterway, around the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and back to Market Street. Since the inception of the walk, the Montgomery County community has collectively raised $2.5 million through Light The Night Walk fundraising efforts. Last year’s walk netted more than $465,000.

“This year, we want to raise more than $535,000,” said Corporate Walk Chair, Fawn Creighton, CEO of Apollo Hospital. “It is a lofty goal, but we know with the support of the community, we can raise these funds to help advance more breakthrough therapies for blood cancer patients.”

The Light The Night Walk hits close to home for Creighton. Her father-in-law recently passed away after a long, hard five-year fight with leukemia.

“I feel a certain calling to be a part of this mission,” said Creighton. “With donations for cancer research declining for the last five years, events like Light The Night have grown in importance. With the Light The Night Walk, everyone can have an impact on the LLS mission to find cures and improve the quality of life for blood cancer patients and their families.”

Thanks to nationwide participation in these walks, LLS has been able to invest more than a billion dollars into research to advance breakthrough cancer treatments that are saving lives today. Despite advances in survival rates, about half of blood cancer patients do not survive, so more funding is needed.
