MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- What’s cooking in Conroe? Forty-two briskets and a mess of beans. For the twenty-seventh year in a row, the Montgomery County Bar Association catered to civil and county workers for the 27th year at the annual Courthouse Appreciation Luncheon, prepared by Scott Golemon’s Good Grub Gang BBQ.

“Judge John C. Moore came up with the idea, and asked me to help him organize it,” said Golemon, an attorney with the Hope & Causey Law Firm. “He was my mentor and a friend. He felt we should show how much the the courthouse and county employees were appreciated.”

So every year Golemon hauls his 35-foot barbecue pit, with three fireboxes and 18 doors, into downtown Conroe, and serves up a traditional Texas barbecue lunch.

“We’re serving full-meat plates...brisket, chicken, and sausage, and the usual sides, potato salad and beans,” said Sara Forlano, President of the Montgomery County Bar Association.

Not only was Golemon’s team back by popular demand with his brisket so tender it doesn’t require teeth, so were his spicy beans that were all the rage at the Texian Heritage Festival this past weekend at historical Fernland Park in Montgomery, Texas.

“We hold this event every October when the weather is more comfortable,” added Forlano.

The courthouse emptied and county workers walked from other area government buildings, to enjoy the feast, the weather and the camaraderie.

“We’ll feed between four and five hundred people,” said Golemon. “We brought plenty. We’ll keep feeding them as long as they keep coming.”

For those who weren’t on the invite list, you can catch the Good Grub Gang’s barbecue at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds next spring, during the cook-off at the annual livestock show. It will be worth waiting for, to chew their Q.
