And just like that, it’s playoff time! The 2014 regular season has come and gone and now it’s time for the Bi-District round of the playoffs this weekend. Four local teams have made the postseason, including College Park, Oak Ridge, The Woodlands, and The Woodlands Christian Academy. Here’s a closer look at their first round match-ups.

Four local teams enter the 2014 football postseason

College Park (3-7) at Spring Westfield (9-1)

Next Up: College Park will travel to Spring Westfield, champions of District 15-6A, on Friday, November 14 at 7pm at Leonard George Stadium in the Bi-District round of the Class 6A Division II playoffs.

Last Week: College Park completed an epic second half comeback with a 27-24 win at home vs. Conroe on Friday. Spring Westfield completed an undefeated district season at 7-0 with a 51-0 dismantling of Klein at home last week.

What to Watch For: College Park’s defensive line. The Cavaliers being able to stop the run will be paramount to having any success as Westfield averages 272 yards rushing per game, with six players averaging better than five yards per carry.

Analysis: The match-up of the Cavaliers and the Mustangs is an interesting one, as College Park’s strength is both their offensive and defensive lines, respectively. Westfield features a lot of speed and dual-threat quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole has 14 touchdowns through the air this season leading the Mustang offense to an average of 36.8 points per game. For College Park to be successful, the Cavaliers cannot commit turnovers and have to play their style of ball control offense and wear down the Mustangs.

Klein Collins (9-1) at Oak Ridge (7-3)

Next Up: Oak Ridge will host Klein Collins on Friday, November 14 at 7:30pm at Woodforest Bank Stadium in the Bi-District round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs.

Last Week: Oak Ridge looked strong in a 38-22 win at home versus Summer Creek. Klein Collins finished District 15-6A play at 6-1 with a 34-0 win over Klein Forest.

What to Watch For: Turnover Margin. For the War Eagles to win, they have to force Klein Collins into some turnovers and then take advantage of them. This season Oak Ridge is 7-0 when they win the turnover battle, 0-3 when they do not.

Analysis: This game has all the makings of a classic. Oak Ridge’s powerful offense versus a very stout Klein Collins defense. When Oak Ridge is running the ball with Kwame Etwi and Justin Edwards, the War Eagles are tough to beat. Watch for Oak Ridge to use the screen pass a little more this week to help neutralize an aggressive Klein Collins defense.

The Woodlands (9-1) at Klein Oak (7-3)

Next Up: The Woodlands will travel to Klein Memorial Stadium to face Klein Oak in the Bi-District round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs on Friday, November 14 at 7pm.

Last Week: The Woodlands offense continued to look strong in a 35-27 home victory last Saturday over Kingwood. Klein Oak lost to Spring 41-16 at home last Friday.

What to Watch For: Highlander Offensive Line. This unit loves to open up big holes for the run game and should be able do so on a Klein Oak defense that allows an average of 30.5 points per game this season.

Analysis: This team is driven to make a run in the postseason, as the Regional Quarterfinal loss to Allen last year left a bad taste in the Highlanders’ mouth all off-season. The Highlander defense only allows an average of 10.3 points per game this season and will look to continue their dominating ways as Senior linebacker Corey Sanders returned to the starting line-up last week against Kingwood. Sometimes to make a run in the postseason the first one is the toughest one. Remember the Bi-District game vs. Klein last year? If The Woodlands can continue to put pressure on the quarterback and be aggressive, the Highlanders will come out with the win.

Irving The Highlands (5-5) at Woodlands Christian (10-0)

Next Up: The Woodlands Christian Academy Warriors host The Highlands Blazers from Irving on Friday, November 14 at 6:30pm at Warrior Stadium in the first round of the TAPPS Division III playoffs.

Last Week: Woodlands Christian completed an undefeated regular season with a 49-8 win over Legacy Prep at home last Friday. Irving The Highlands was shut out 44-0 at home to Waco Reicher Catholic last Friday

What to Watch For: Warrior offense. This unit can definitely score some points, as the Warriors average better than 49 points per game and have score 50 or more points five times this season.

Analysis: The Warriors are fielding the best team in school history, however cannot let up and be a victim of their own success. Last year, the Warriors traveled to Marble Falls for the first round of the postseason and beat #1 and 10-0 Faith Academy on the road. This time around the Warriors are the #1 and 10-0 and they’re going to get The Highlands’ best shot come Friday night. On offense Luke Hudson and company are a strong running force to reckon with as Hudson has more than 1400 yards rushing and 25 rushing touchdowns this season. The Warriors are strong on both the offense and defensive side of the ball and have been wearing opposing teams down all year. If the Warriors continue to bring their business-like mentality, they’ll go far this postseason.
