THE WOODLANDS, Texas - More than 450 women and a few brave men were in attendance at the 2014 Women Who Rock Lunch, held at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center.

Moving into the second year of the Women Who Rock Lunch, the Montgomery County United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) boosted attendance and awareness by landing the high energy, motivational Keynote speaker Karen McCullough, author of “The Seven Women Project” and former branding super star.

Women’s Leadership Council Chair Rhetta Bobo with Consolidated Communications, Event Co-Chair Tami Buron with SWBC Mortgage, Event Co-Chair Jeanne Toth with The Woodlands Development Company and two of the Young Mother’s Daycare scholarship recipients took over the stage and shared their passion and stories about the WLC Young Mother’s Daycare Scholarship and encouraged attendees to give and get involved.

Rhetta recounted the difficulties of being a young mother while attending college, the high costs of quality childcare and how it becomes a barrier for many young mothers. Bobo encouraged attendees to help support the efforts of the deserving young mothers citing that education was the key to breaking the poverty cycle. Buron and Toth added that through the generosity of WLC members over the past year, six young mothers were awarded scholarships and would be able to attend school knowing that their children would be in good hands. For these young mothers, the heavy burden of day care costs which can reach $6,500 annually had been alleviated.

Veronica Hernandez-Lozano, a 20-year-old mother of two and two time recipient of the scholarship thanked WLC for their support and shared her families’ story of escaping an environment heavily influenced by the Mexican Cartel. Veronica was born and raised in Conroe and despite her many obstacles graduated with a 3.3 GPA. Hernandez-Lozano is currently studying to become a nurse with plans to continue her education to become an anesthesiologist.

The 2nd Annual Women Who Rock Lunch was presented by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation who also sponsored a full scholarship for one lucky mom. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company and Woodforest National Bank also proudly sponsored full scholarships. Other top sponsors included Consolidated Communications, SWBC Mortgage, Talisman Energy, and The Woodlands Development Company, Closing out the highly successful luncheon, The Women’s Leadership Council raised upwards of $78,000.
