LSC-Montgomery’s “Speech and Debate” performance receives choice awards

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Lone Star College-Montgomery drama department’s fall production of “Speech and Debate,” directed by Tim Campbell, received the rare feat of a choice award in the Kennedy Center American College Texas State Theatre Festival (KCACTF) this October.

“Speech and Debate” was awarded Respondent’s Choice, which is selected by the festival respondent who sees and responds to each performance at the festival. This is the fourth consecutive year that the college has received a choice award, and the production will now be considered for advancement to the regional festival in San Angelo in February.

“KCACT gives our students excellent transfer and scholarship opportunities by allowing them to network with other students and schools at the festival,” said Chase Waites, professor of drama at LSC-Montgomery, and director of the production. “Participating at the state level provides the students with opportunities to travel to the regional festival in February to compete for scholarships and interview with transfer universities and colleges. It also provides the students the opportunity to tour a show, which is a great experience for them.”

12 students and two faculty members attended this year’s festival with “Speech and Debate,” some of which were recognized for meritorious achievement in: Dramaturgy-Alex Allen, student at LSC-Montgomery; Projection Design-Brandon Greenbaum, student at LSC-Montgomery, and Romy Shaw, student at LSC-Montgomery. Also, LSC-Montgomery students Sarah Saflin, Joey Sheaff, and Grand Athans were all Irene Ryan scholarship nominees from the production. Waites also received special recognition for support of educational theatre for his work as KCACTF Region 6 vice chair.

The theatre festival was held at San Jacinto College-Central. The other schools at the festival included Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Angelo State, San Jacinto College-Central, San Jacinto College-South, and Lone Star College-Kingwood.
