THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks, Black Friday is a day to get great deals, and Cyber Monday is a day to hit the Internet to cross names off one’s shopping list.

Now there is #GivingTuesday. This day, dedicated to giving back, is different. #GivingTuesday was founded in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. With a team of founding partners, the global movement now raises support for more than 10,000 organizations worldwide.

On December 2, the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, businesses, corporations and individuals are asked to help jump start the giving season by donating to worthy causes.

Locally, The Woodlands Children’s Museum has been designated a partner organization – and is encouraging families and businesses to show some love on #GivingTuesday.

The Museum’s leadership is asking for support that will allow it to sustain and grow interactive exhibits that excite children about art, science and culture. “We’re looking forward to being a part of this wonderful worldwide initiative that reminds us how meaningful it is to reach out and help others,” Angela Colton, the museum’s executive director, said.

More than 40 percent of the museum’s operating revenue comes from gifts from individuals, businesses and corporations. These donations enable the museum to keep admission and membership costs affordable, develop exhibits, and underwrite school field trips to the museum as well as outreach programs.

“Contributions made to The Woodlands Children’s Museum during #GivingTuesday will help us maintain and improve our exhibits,” Colton said. “The generosity of others makes our museum possible.”

The museum welcomes more than 90,000 visitors a year, provides several other programs in the community and at area schools throughout the year and also partners in several national initiatives.

Located at 4775 W. Panther Creek Drive, Suite 280, in The Woodlands, 77381, the museum offers educational exhibits, a full calendar of exciting activities and a cool space for creative play.
