THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital has announced it will renovate and expand its hospital-based Emergency Department (ED) to better respond to the emergent needs of the greater Montgomery County area. The $17.4 million project will include a renovation of the existing space and the addition of approximately 3,400 square feet, bringing the total footprint of the unit to 32,400 square feet.

“Montgomery County and the surrounding area continue to grow by leaps and bounds,” said Josh Urban, CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands. “The most recent numbers I’ve seen estimate a five-year population growth of 11.4 percent, or more than 70,000 residents.”

“To be successful and fulfill our mission to advance health, we must grow with the community,” added Urban. “We are on the right path to support the community’s health needs. In the past five years, Memorial Hermann has invested more than $175 million into facilities, new technologies and services to meet the demand. Our Emergency Department expansion is the next step.”

Scheduled to begin in early 2015, the expansion will add seven additional treatment rooms, including three state-of-the-art trauma rooms, bringing the total room count to 35. Additionally, a separate area will be designed specifically for pediatric patients.

Furthermore, Memorial Hermann Life Flight® will have an increased presence at the hospital, as well as a new “home.” The helipad will relocate to the roof of the new East Tower.

“We’ve heard from patients and understand the importance of having the full spectrum of quality care right here where they live and work,” continued Urban. “While our new Emergency Department aims to do just that, with more space, upgraded equipment and increased Life Flight capabilities, we intend to take it a step further. We are on a journey to become a Level II Trauma Center, capable of handling the sickest patients and most traumatic injuries.”

Memorial Hermann The Woodlands currently functions as a Level III Trauma Center. The move to Level II means patients would have immediate around-the-clock access to a range of specialists trained to provide emergency, trauma and critical care. Specialties include general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, critical care and more.

Urban and his team have been working side-by-side with colleagues at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, the nation’s busiest Level I Trauma Center, to achieve the Level II designation. The hospital will begin functioning like a Level II Trauma Center in early 2015 and plans a certification visit in late 2015.
