THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- If you’ve navigated around The Woodlands for even a short distance, undoubtedly you’ve noticed the outdoor sculptures scattered throughout the community. But did you know The Woodlands has the largest collection of outdoor sculptures for a community its size, in the world?

The self-proclaimed, unofficial ambassador to The Woodlands outdoor sculpture collection, the late Tony Motto, brought the community’s attention to this magnificent collection when he formed a business named Sculp-Tours. Motto wanted to share the history of the sculptures and their artists, not only with tourists, but residents and school children.

A former art teacher for the Conroe Independent School District, Motto was especially interested in perpetuating the collection’s’ legacy, which meant reaching its future stewards. In order to do that, Motto compiled a book of beautiful color photographs of the collection’s installations from 1974 - 2009. Motto wrote the book and, photographed the sculptures; the book was edited by his wife, Jodi Motto. Included is a map of the locations of the sculptures that are showcased in the book.

“The book was originally intended to be a school book for art teachers, in the hopes that they would take their art students on field trips to see the sculptures,” said the late Motto.

Over the years the books became souvenirs for those who took the “Sculp Tour,” and holiday gifts to and from Woodlands residents. The book would make an excellent gift for realtors to present to new homeowners in The Woodlands, art teachers, client gifts, and for anyone who takes pride in living in The Woodlands.

A limited number of first and second editions of "The Woodlands Outdoor Sculptures," are still available in paperback only. First Editions are $19.95; Second Editions $15.00. Call Woodlands Online at 281-465-8421 to obtain copies. There are no plans at this time for a third printing of the book.
