CONROE, Texas - The Woodlands Highlanders have used solid defense to get off to a fast start in the 2014-15 season and that was on display as the Highlanders force a turnover on the final Conroe possession to escape with a 52-51 district opening win at Conroe on Friday night.

The Woodlands (14-6, 1-0) had a slim three-point lead with just 90 seconds to play, however Conroe (13-8, 0-1) couldn’t muster any offense has they had two crucial turnovers and hit just 1-of-2 free throws down the stretch.

Junior Cameron Burkett paced the Highlanders with a game-high 18 points, while Freshman Romello Wilbert had 14 points for The Woodlands. Conroe was led by Freshman point guard Jay Lewis with 17 points.

The Woodlands will hit the road twice next week beginning on Tuesday, January 6 at state-ranked No.1 Atascocita (18-1, 1-0) at 7pm and at College Park (11-11, 0-1) on Friday, January 9 at 7pm.
