THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Author, educator, and librarian D.H. Figueredo sets out to discredit the myths and falsehoods of the American West by chronicling the cultural perceptions that led to historical inaccuracies in his lecture on Thursday, March 19, at 11:30 a.m., as part of Lone Star College-Montgomery’s Lyceum Speaker’s Series. The lecture, which is free to the public, will take place in the Music Hall (Building H), on the LSC-Montgomery campus.

Figueredo will speak on Thursday, March 19, at 11:30 a.m., as part of Lone Star College-Montgomery’s Lyceum Speaker’s Series.

In his book, “Revolvers and Pistolas, Vaqueros and Caballeros,” Figueredo tells through spellbinding accounts, chapters that address the legends behind the caballeros, Mexican culture in the Old West, and the search for cities of gold in the southwest. Arranged chronologically and thematically, the book examines how popular culture diminished the role of the Mexican vaqueros and illustrates how the image of the Anglo cowboy became the iconic symbol of the Old West.

Figueredo, a native of Cuba, has made the United States his home and has worked in libraries since the 1970s. He has written a number of children’s books, authored a few volumes in the “Idiot’s Guide” series, and completed other works, including picture books on Latin-American culture.

As the director of the Bloomfield College Library in New Jersey, Figueredo holds a master’s degree in Caribbean and Latin American studies from New York University and a master’s degree in library science from Rutgers University, and resides in Piscataway, New Jersey, with his wife and children.
