THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Painted doors are popping up in displays all around South Montgomery County heralding the upcoming 2015 Building Hope Gala, “An Evening at Downton Abbey” set for Saturday, April 18 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel. Inspired by how Habitat for Humanity transforms lives by making the dream of homeownership a reality for deserving, low-income families, area artists have turned plain, salvaged doors into beautiful works of art with the support of The Woodlands Art League. A total of eight doors will be auctioned off at the Gala to raise funds for Habitat’s mission.

Similar to the Cow Parade that was held in Houston in 2001, these original painted doors are currently ‘on parade’ at locations throughout South Montgomery County. The parade began with three of the doors on display at the Gala Kick-Off Party held at The Woodlands BMW on January 28. The doors set the room abuzz with excitement, as they were part of the evening’s “special reveal.” Each of the displayed doors received a pre-Gala opening bid at that event.

Next, six of the doors were displayed at three Anadarko Petroleum Corporation buildings in The Woodlands, and currently doors can be seen at five Woodforest National Bank locations in The Woodlands and Conroe. Other upcoming display locations include St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, The Woodlands United Methodist Church and Strike, LLC among others.

The artists participating in this year’s Doors Project include artists Jackie Impey, Carolina Dalmas, Kim Wallace and Chris McBee of The Woodlands; Shae and Shirley Skidmore of Cypress; and Joella Guaraglia-Wheeler of Spring. Each of the artists is well known in the area for their unique, creative talents, having received numerous accolades for their art. Additionally, one door is the creative collaboration of art students from McCullough Junior High School in The Woodlands, under the direction of art teacher, Cindy Moss.

“I have greatly enjoyed working with the talented artists participating in the Doors Project again this year,” said Shelly Sauer, Doors Project Chairperson. “They have selflessly spent many hours creating beautiful artwork for the benefit of Montgomery County Habitat for Humanity. The doors truly are pieces of fine art that would look wonderful in a home or corporate setting.”

The public is encouraged to see the doors on display in the community or on Habitat’s website at www.hfhmctx.org. Read about the artists and the inspiration behind their pieces.
