John Cooper students place in top spots at local, regional science, math competitions

THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Upper School students from The John Cooper School earned top awards and recognitions at the Education for Tomorrow Alliance SCI://Tech Exposition held in January and February in Montgomery County, and at the Science Engineering Fair of Houston in late February. Kaitlyn Ramirez, a sophomore, took first place and the Grand Award at the Houston competition, enabling her to bypass the state competition and head to international competition in May. Additionally, the team of Sydney Shannon and Zane Shah captured first place out of 63 teams that competed at the Biotechnology Competition held at the local SCI://Tech competition. A Cooper math student was also a member of the team that won first place in the SCI://Tech Math Bowl.

Headed straight to Intel International Fair

After taking third place in the life sciences category at the local SCI://Tech Exposition, sophomore Kaitlyn Ramirez captured first place at the Houston science fair and was awarded the Grand Award, earning her the ability to compete at the international level without having to qualify at the state level. Her project, entitled “Water Contaminant Removal: Will It Glow?” looked at remediating and detecting heavy metal pollution in water supplies through the use of bioluminescent bacteria. Ramirez also received the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award, presented to “the student whose research has demonstrated the principles and technical innovations that offer the greatest potential for sustainable development.”

Ramirez said the recognitions were very rewarding and inspiring, especially earning one of two Grand Awards awarded in the Life Sciences category. She will continue in competition at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Pittsburgh, May 10-15. Between now and then, she will continue to work on her presentation and said she is grateful to the Cooper science faculty who worked with her to refine her research methods.

Junior represents Cooper on first place Math Bowl Team

Cooper students, juniors Elizabeth Dunbar (statistics) and David McDonald (pre-calculus), and sophomore Jack Wade (algebra 2) qualified to participate in the SCI://Tech Math Bowl competition on January 31. Eight teams were formed, each with an algebra 1, geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Statistics student from various Montgomery County schools. The top three teams were awarded medals. McDonald was a member of the team that captured first place, representing Cooper as the pre-calculus student.
