MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas - Alice Cangemi will be the featured guest speaker at the upcoming casino night dinner fundraiser benefiting Children’s Safe Harbor on April 10 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.

LSC-Montgomery professor and Conroe grad to share her story and her novel about sexual abuse at fundraiser to benefit Children’s Safe Harbor.

Cangemi, who is a professor at Lone Star College – Montgomery and a former teacher and graduate of Conroe High School, recently published a novel titled The Darkness Before Dawn to caution others about child-on-child sexual abuse. She will explain how easily the abuse can occur and how just as easily it can be prevented from ever happening. Hers is a story of survival, resilience and healing.

Children’s Safe Harbor’s mission is to protect and enhance the life of every child who has the courage to battle sexual or severe physical abuse. As a nationally accredited nonprofit organization founded in 1998, Children’s Safe Harbor is part of a nationwide effort to heal the trauma and facilitate justice for children ages 2 through 17 and their families. Children's Safe Harbor advanced their collaborative justice work in 2009 through the creation of an expanded co-located facility serving children and their families all in one building – minimizing the need for children to retell their experience to multiple agencies, while facilitating investigation, prosecution, justice and healing.

During the annual fundraiser – themed “Betting on Courage” – The Becker Family Foundation will be honored for their long-standing support of Children’s Safe Harbor. In addition to an exciting casino night and a delicious dinner, there will be dancing to live music by The Chinatown Band along with a silent auction of fabulous items.

“We are excited to have Alice Cangemi as our guest speaker and share her incredible story about childhood sexual abuse and the aftermath that victims suffer all the way into adulthood. She personifies the hope and possibility of healing, which is the journey that Children’s Safe Harbor is dedicated to facilitating for so many innocent children,” said Victoria Constance, PhD, executive director of Children’s Safe Harbor.

“Furthermore, we are so very delighted to make a special recognition in honor of The Becker Family Foundation to show our appreciation for their many years of financial support, board membership, and volunteerism,” continued Dr. Constance. “They have truly made an impact on our progress as we continue to work toward breaking the cycle of abuse and trauma for the vulnerable young in our community.”
