THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Few students look forward to the hours spent bubbling in Scantrons with No. 2 pencils for standardized tests.

Get ready to shine on the SATs and end-of-course tests

While parents cannot be in the classroom to help, there are several steps they can take in advance of the test to make the experience better for their children – whether preparing for a final exam or the SATs.

Kim Bellini, owner and director of The Woodlands LearningRx, said the first thing parents can do for their children is to research the test.

“Take some time to read about the test, find example questions online and talk to your kids about what to expect,” she said. “Sometimes, reminding them that they already have skills can help them build confidence and increase test scores.”

Students can try a sample test and see how well they do, Bellini added.

“Practice with your children and talk them through some of the challenging questions,” she suggested.

Bellini said it is always important that students get plenty of sleep before the test. The next morning, the recipe for success includes a healthy breakfast.

“Just because your child is smart, does not mean he or she will ace the big exam,” she said. “Proper nutrition will fuel your child’s brain – and a good night’s rest never hurts.”

Bellini said that anxiety can prevent children from performing well on a standardized test.

“Teach your child relaxation tips like deep breathing, meditation or visualization,” she said. “It’s important to build confidence and find ways to make the process less stressful.”

If children are still struggling, weak cognitive skills may be to blame, Bellini said. “Your child may not be able to master the knowledge needed to pass the test if the tools required to learn are not working.”

The Woodlands LearningRx offers programs to build cognitive skills – auditory and visual processing, comprehension, logic, and reasoning, memory and attention.

Helping children reach their full potential is one of the chief goals of The Woodlands LearningRx, a brain-training center that offers unique programs to transform a student’s ability to learn at a core level. The center is located at 10857 Kuykendahl Road, Ste. 240.
