ORIGINAL STORY

THE WOODLANDS, Texas - On Saturday, May 9, join The Woodlands community for the First Annual Kristi’s 5K Scholarship Run. All funds raised at the event will go towards a scholarship fund for a deserving Highstepper, while rallying support for one of Woodlands’ own, Kristi Huerter Herring, who has stage 4 breast cancer.

Herring, a resident of The Woodlands since 1974, has a deep connection to the community. A graduate of McCullough High School and member of the highly reputable The Woodlands High School Highsteppers, Herring returned back to her hometown after college where she now resides with her husband Chris, and children Tristan and Skylar. Herring was an English teacher for CISD for many years as well as a junior high drill team director, where she impacted many students throughout her career. She also grew a love for running, and competed in many half and full marathons, including local races such as The Houston Marathon and The Woodlands Marathon.

“Running has been a part of my life ever since I stopped dancing,” said Herring.

In 2010, Herring was diagnosed with breast cancer, and through the difficult times, she was surrounded by loving family and friends, while being able to continue running and staying active. Then, in 2013, the cancer was found in her bones and had to undergo additional chemo treatments, stopping her from running. However, this didn’t stop her courage and compassion, and instead of dwelling on the negatives, Herring decided to take her cancer fight and turn it into something positive.

Combining her love for dancing, running and family, Herring wanted an event that the whole community could rally around. An idea to start a 5K run in her honor came about from some friends who are a part of the Highstepper organization. Funds raised at the event will go towards a college scholarship for a deserving Highstepper, as well as a trust fund for Herring’s children, Tristan and Skylar.

“Education has always been important to my family and to me. To help someone further benefit her education and career is an amazing opportunity to give back,” said Herring. "I loved being a part of the Highsteppers organization, and it gave me a lot of personal characteristics I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.”

The run also has a personal meaning to Herring, as it will be something her kids can witness every year as an event where the community shows support for a wonderful cause and support for them.

“Throughout this whole cancer journey, I have been loved by this community,” said Herring. “It would mean the world to me that my kids get to see first hand a group coming together for the love of running and walking and for a Highstepper. They have seen love throughout this cancer challenge for our family, and this run is a chance for them to see every year that they are loved and that the community cares about them.”

The 5K fun run and 1-mile kids run will start at The Woodlands High School, located at 6101 Research Forest Drive. The kids run will be begin at 8am, with the 5K starting at 9am. 5K participants will begin at TWHS and loop around Cochrans Crossing to the back of the high school track. The kids race will be around campus, also ending at the track. The event is meant to be fun and enjoyable for the whole family, while raising funds for a deserving Highstepper and supporting Herring and her family as she continues her fight against cancer.
