The Woodlands, Texas – Eighteen months ago, local endurance athlete Buck Gardenier set out on a mission to raise awareness for poverty-stricken orphans on South Africa’s Eastern Cape. When he concludes his campaign in May, Gardenier will have competed in 5 endurance races, spanning over 407 miles to create awareness, purpose and hope for the orphans of South Africa.

Local endurance athlete comes to the end of his year-long journey for poverty-stricken orphans

On Saturday, May 16, Gardenier will bring his journey to a close by competing in the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas, a challenging race consisting of a 2.4 mile swim in Lake Woodlands, a 112 mile bike, and a 26.2 mile run. Training with a purpose and for the needs of others has changed Gardenier, as every training run, swim, and ride has been powered with the plight of the orphan. As he put in the miles over the past 18 months, Gardenier has learned to put the needs of others before his own. He has inspired his friends and family to be present and grateful, be a good steward and to give freely of love. Gardenier will not be alone during his final race, as he will be competing in the Ironman Texas with fellow The Woodlands High School alumnus, Reed Evans, who was inspired by Buck’s dedication and perseverance. It will be the first Ironman for both men, who were part of the first graduating class of The Woodlands High School and were members of the swim team.

25:40 is a nonprofit organization that supports the orphaned children in the often overlooked rural areas of South Africa in providing academic support, skills training, health care, nutrition, and advocacy in a comprehensive after-school program. 25:40 provides a fighting chance for orphaned and vulnerable children so they can have a future free from poverty, disease and violence. Over the past year, Gardenier has raised awareness and financial resources to ensure every child has access to 25:40’s programs and services.

Prior to the Ironman Texas, Gardenier will celebrate the closing of this chapter by shining a light on the mission of 25:40 with Celebration of Hope on Friday, May 15. This lively dinner and silent auction will take place at HopePointe Church, 3333 S. Panther Creek Drive, The Woodlands from 6:30pm – 8:30pm. Proceeds from the event will go to 25:40, providing purpose, healing and hope to orphaned children.
