HOUSTON, Texas – During National Nurses Week, Memorial Hermann is proud to celebrate the role nurses play throughout the year in delivering the highest level of quality care to patients.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the greater Houston area was the fifth largest employer of nurses in the U.S. in 2014.

Memorial Hermann will host several events during National Nurses Week to celebrate the 7,479 registered nurses and 322 licensed vocational nurses employed by the System.

“Our nursing staff is the backbone of our hospital system; the link between the patient and family, the physician and the organization,” said Dan Wolterman, President and CEO of Memorial Hermann Health System. “I’m proud that we have such a talented staff, and we are committed to investing in programs that will continue to attract and retain the best possible nurses in the country.”

In addition to career advancement, cross-training, as well as continuing and specialty education programs, current and future Memorial Hermann nurses can soon take advantage of enhanced benefits available to all employees, including a unique student loan repayment program.

“National Nurses Week provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the dedication, caring and passion of our nurses and recognize the daily impact they have on patient care and the success of our hospital,” said Charles “Chuck” D. Stokes, M.H.A., R.N., Chief Operating Officer of Memorial Hermann Health System.

In 2014, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center achieved one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can receive – Magnet® designation for excellence in nursing services by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Of the more than 5,000 hospitals in the U.S., only 406 are Magnet facilities. Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center and Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital are also Magnet designated facilities.

In order to earn Magnet status, hospitals must excel in several areas including nursing standards and practices, patient care and innovations in nursing leadership and management.
