What is an EKG?

Also known as an ECG, an EKG is a non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the heart to help determine if a heart attack has occurred or if a heart attack is developing, and helps monitor changes in heart rhythm. The test can help identify young athletes who are at risk for sudden cardiac death, a condition where death results from an abrupt loss of heart function. An EKG screen may assist in diagnosing several different heart conditions that may contribute to sudden cardiac death.

These screenings have helped identify cardiac conditions in other students across the greater Houston area. The athletic physicals team from Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital referred 14 of the first 1,000 Lake Houston area students it administered EKG screenings to this spring to pediatric cardiologists for further review.
