THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Hurricane season is fast approaching. In the Houston area, there is always a very real possibility of an evacuation. For that reason, it’s important to make a plan and to be ready.

Six steps to take now to prepare your car for an evacuation

Mike Pendley of Milstead Automotive offers the following checklist to help families prepare for the hurricane season.

  • Make a plan – In the event of an evacuation, it’s vital to have your route mapped out, including alternative routes in case of flooding or road closures. “There’s nothing worse than being stuck in an emergency situation,” Pendley said. Plan where you and your family will go to ride out the storm. Talk to friends and relatives ahead of time to arrange for a place to stay should the need arise.
  • Check the fluids – Routine maintenance is often neglected, so this is a good time to check and replenish all fluids, including oil, transmission, brake, radiator coolant, battery, power steering and windshield wiper fluids.
  • Fuel up – At the first sign of a hurricane threat, beat the rush to the gas station. Fill your car and any reserve gas canisters to their full capacity.
  • Check the tire pressure – Ensure that all tires are properly inflated, including the spare. “Tires need to be rotated every 6,000 miles to prevent uneven wear and tear,” Pendley said. “You should also have the alignment checked to prevent the car pulling to either side when driving.”
  • Inspect the windshield wipers – “People often neglect to replace their wiper blades,” Pendley said. “They should be replaced every six to twelve months or anytime the rubber is worn out.”
  • Pack emergency supplies – Items to keep in your vehicle include an automotive toolkit, extra fuses, road flares, extra motor oil, emergency tire sealant, a tire jack, jumper cables, a flashlight, extra batteries, a battery powered radio, power steering fluid and antifreeze. Pendley advised drivers to also bring a first aid kit, blankets, extra food, a can opener and plenty of water.

“Be smart and be safe,” Pendley said. “Don’t drive through standing water and be sure to park your vehicle on higher ground away from trees or light poles. Preventative maintenance is the best way to ensure that your vehicle is ready in case of an emergency.”
