Theme Weeks at The Woodlands LearningRX make brain training fun

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Kim Bellini, owner and director of The Woodlands LearningRx, believes having fun is key to building brain power.

She points to studies that have shown unstructured play – from wrestling to tea parties – helps the brain build new circuits, which later aid in memory, the ability to learn, schoolwork success and even social interactions.

“We can actually take advantage of a child’s natural way of learning to ensure they have the highest level of success in life,” she said. “Play is a great way for children to learn to socialize, harness their creativity and discover their personal interests.”

To build on the process of play, she and her coaching team strive to create a fun environment at The Woodlands LearningRx. During the summer months, the brain-training center hosts theme weeks, getting students to dress up as pirates, beach-lovers and their favorite characters, with the most creative get-ups receiving a surprise prize.

Students enrolled at The Woodlands LearningRx this summer are also playing “Brainopoly” – a large, customized twist on the classic board game.

“We want to motivate students to be creative – and we want children to have fun when they’re here,” Bellini said. “Children learn the most when they are having fun. Any time you can help create a game or an adventure that stimulates young minds, it’s a great opportunity to build problem-solving skills, develop critical thinking and promote social skills.”
